1. What has most inspired and shaped your approach to patient care?
Looking at patient outcomes and seeing how I can return people back to their original life. A lot of the diagnoses that send a patient to us in plastic surgery for reconstruction can be pretty life derailing. So the ability to get them back on track and have them tell you that they can continue with the activities that they once enjoyed is really inspiring.
2. What's your favorite part of your job?
The combination of research and clinical medicine. When we're able to make an advance in the research setting and see that translate to better patient care, that just shows that this whole mechanism of academic medicine can bring our specialty forward. It can move the needle, and it allows for more innovation.
3. What’s your biggest fear as a patient?
Thankfully I've been blessed with pretty good health. But I guess I'm always afraid of getting bad, unexpected news and having to digest that and determine what it means for me going forward.
4. What do you do for stress relief?
A lot of athletics. We live in a great part of the state. We have mountains on one side and water on the other side. I'm also surrounded by a very good resource pool of friends that really help wipe away any worries that I have.
5. Dogs or cats?
A dog person. A little bit allergic to cats.
6. Last movie you watched? Thumbs up or down?
The only movies I've seen recently have been on airplanes. The most recent one is Gladiator II, and it was a definite thumbs up. I thought they really did a nice job carrying a theme forward from a movie that everyone loves.
7. Best advice you've ever heard?
The one that comes to mind is learning how to say no. The first half of a physician's career is saying yes, trying to have all these opportunities and making sure that you've got a good breadth of practice. Then you spend the second half of your career learning how to say no.
