Matthew Wolf is the co-director of UVA’s cardiovascular genetics program. In 2015, Dr. Wolf came to UVA from Duke University where he developed a clinic for patients with inherited heart diseases and researched the molecular causes of heart failure. He completed his medical residency and cardiology fellowship at Duke and earned his MD and PhD from the Washington University School of Medicine. His research focus is on the discovery and understanding of the genetic causes of cardiomyopathy using model systems with the hope of developing new treatments for patients with heart failure.

[MUSIC PLAYING] MATTHEW WOLF: My name's Matthew Wolf, and I'm a cardiologist at the University of Virginia Medical Center. My interest in cardiology started around the time of medical school, when I became interested in how individuals develop cardiomyopathies, or a problem with the way their heart muscle functions. And I thought it was an intriguing area of research because it would allow me to try and identify genes and signaling pathways that may help provide new insights and therapies that could help patients. Really, I like to try and think of the patient as an entire, whole individual who has many different facets or things that they're concerned about, not only the problems that bring them to medical attention but how that impacts their life, their family, and the way they interact with their community. It's a privilege for me when patients come in and share with me part of their life story and the problems that they're having and allowing me to have an opportunity to try and sort out those issues and see how we can help.
