Dr. Swati Rao Video Profile
I'm Swati Rao. I'm a transplant nephrologist at University of Virginia. We see patients before transplant. Patients who have chronic kidney disease, they come for evaluation to make sure that they're good candidates for transplant. I also see patients right after transplant during their hospital stay when they are most vulnerable for any complications, and we make sure that the patient and their kidney transplant is doing well. What attracted me towards medicine and towards nephrology was the first time I saw a dialysis patient, and the next patient that I saw was a kidney transplant recipient. The difference that these therapies can make to patients, prolonging their life, giving them good quality of life, so that they can continue to perform and live life to the best in the community for their families was what drove me towards nephrology and transplant. During my early years in nephrology and transplant, we were taking care of this young female who really wanted to have children after transplant. And during that process, we got involved with the complications that can arise, how to best give her advice on the things that she needed to do in order to have a successful pregnancy was what shaped my interest in transplant and pregnancy after transplant, and that's what I do as research also. Patients who come for kidney transplant to UVA get the best care. They get the most cutting-edge technology. We are pushing the boundaries every time when it comes to our patient care. I love my work. I really love my work. It gives me a lot of satisfaction when I finish the end of the day and you have helped a patient. It's very rewarding.
