Swati Rao, MD

Dr. Swati Rao, M.D. Associate Professor of Medicine, to the Division of Nephrology. Swati is a transplant nephrologist who will be the Medical Director of Pancreas Transplantation at UVA.  She received her MBBS Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Mumbai, India followed by internship in internal medicine at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and residency at the UH, University of Massachusetts.  She then completed her fellowship at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, Renal Transplant Fellowship at Emory University before returning to Temple to become an Assistant Professor and Medical Director of the Pancreas Transplant Program.  Swati is an outstanding educator and clinician and was thought of very highly by her Chief, Crystal Gadegbeku (former UVA fellow).    Clinical Interest: She has an interest in kidney and pancreas transplantation and has extensive experience in managing complex cases. She is involved in all aspects of transplantation starting from candidate evaluation to long term post-transplant management. Pregnancy after transplant is a special interest of Dr Rao. Working in collaboration with Transplant Pregnancy International, she conducts valuable research in this area.  She continues to pursue biostatistics course and proficient in various statistical programs.      Family and Interests: She lives in Charlottesville area with her husband. Together they have a goal to visit all the 60 National Park. When not working, she loves to curl up with a good book.
