James Mahoney III, PhD, is an associate professor and clinical neuropsychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences.
While Dr. Mahoney assesses and evaluates patients with multiple medical, neurological, and psychiatric diagnoses, his clinical and research interests focus on addiction and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Mahoney serves as the director of the Center for Psychiatric Neuromodulation Research (CPNR). His specific area of research interest, and the focus of the CPNR, involves investigating various forms of neuromodulation, such as focused ultrasound, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve stimulation.
He has over 20 years of research experience, most of which have focused on the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders. He has co-authored over 85 peer-reviewed manuscripts (33 first/senior authored), published several book chapters, presented original research findings at several international conferences, and served as co-investigator on several NIDA- and NIGMS-funded proposals.
Dr. Mahoney has led multiple first-in-the-world and first-in-the-U.S. clinical trials investigating different forms of neuromodulation, including deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound, for treatment of refractory substance use disorder.
Dr. Mahoney received an undergraduate degree in psychology from Bridgewater College and a master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles. He completed his PhD doctoral training in counseling psychology at the University of Houston, a pre-doctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and specialized post-doctoral training in neuropsychology at the University of Virginia.
