Bio & Overview
Joy Miller, CPNP-PC, is a pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric palliative care at UVA Health Children’s. With 19 years of pediatric experience, she brings deep clinical expertise and compassionate leadership to her role. Since joining thepediatric palliative care team in 2011, Joy has provided holistic, family-centered care to children living with complex, life-limiting illnesses across hospital and community settings. She also facilitates and medically directs pediatric hospice care, working to expand access both within the inpatient environment and throughout the community to ensure continuity, dignity, and compassion at every stage of a child’s journey.
Joy’s work is grounded in bearing witness to the emotional terrain families navigate—grief, fear, and identity loss—when facing medical complexity in their children. She partners closely with caregivers and interdisciplinary teams to create safe, consistent spaces for decision-making rooted in empathy and trust.
A New Jersey native, Joy earned her B.S. in Health Sciences from James Madison University and her BSN from Seton Hall University. In 2007, she returned to UVA to work in acute care pediatrics and earned her MSN/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner degree. Since joining the pediatric palliative care service, she has helped grow the program to include perinatal palliative care and led efforts to expand access to pediatric hospice services.
Joy is emerging as a national and regional expert in pediatric palliative care and is a passionate advocate for improving care for children with serious illness. She is currently pursuing dual Doctor of Nursing Practice Executive and MBA degrees at Johns Hopkins University. Her doctoral research focuses on improving access to pediatric palliative care through clinician education and early screening.
Outside of work, Joy cherishes time spent with her husband, two children, and their Golden Doodle, OB. Together, they enjoy exploring Bald Head Island and cheering on UVA athletics.
