Bio & Overview
James “Kyle” Vick is a dentist who specializes in orofacial pain (OFP) or the diagnosis, management and treatment of pain disorders of the jaw, mouth, face, head and neck.
When it comes to patient care, Dr. Vick believes you should always lead with kindness, empathy and patience. He shares, “I try to involve patients in their treatment decisions, and I approach every clinical decision by asking, ‘What would I want or what would I do for my own loved ones?'"
For him, dentistry has always been a family business. His grandfather ran a denture lab for 40 years, and his father retired from orthodontics at age 70. Yet, it wasn’t a profession Dr. Vick gravitated to right away. After high school, he attended the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in landscape architecture.
“Working for a planning department quickly helped me decide to go to dental school,” he says. Dr. Vick did just that. He graduated from UT Houston Dental School and spent 14 years in private practice before transitioning to the U.S. Navy, where he spent 10 years on active duty. He was stationed in Guam for 3 years and, during this time, was selected for a 3-year orofacial pain residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
After completing his training in OFP, Dr. Vick was stationed in Norfolk, where he completed the rest of his service as an orofacial pain specialist. Dr. Vick spent almost 3 years teaching undergraduate dental students at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry before transitioning to UVA Health in 2024.
Dr. Vick will continue focusing on training young dentists in the graduate dental residency. He will be sharing his expertise in orofacial pain, as well as his many years’ experience in general dentistry.
