Bio & Overview
As an anesthesiologist, Geir Ivar Elgjo, MD, administers anesthesia and provides pain management for patients before surgery and during medical procedures to ensure their safety and comfort.
Dr. Elgjo says. “I try to remember I am not working with ‘patients’ but with fellow human beings, and the roles we play might easily be reversed.”
While he grew up in Oslo, Norway, with parents and grandfathers who were all doctors, he wasn’t encouraged to pursue medicine more than any other interests. “I was headed for the Norwegian Ballet Academy when I realized how short a career that might be and how it would be difficult to satisfy my curiosity for the workings of the body,” he says.
Dr. Elgjo attended medical school at the University of Oslo and earned a PhD from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed a fellowship at the Galveston Shriners Hospital and a cardiovascular anesthesia fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
He previously worked on the cardiothoracic team at UVA Health from 2004–2008 before returning with his family to Norway, where he worked as a physician on a rescue helicopter.
