Bio & Overview
Christopher Stout, MD, is an anesthesiologist and intensivist at UVA Health, specializing in the critical care of cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients. He earned his medical degree and completed his anesthesiology residency here at UVA before going on to complete a critical care fellowship at Columbia University. After fellowship, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania as an intensivist in the Heart and Vascular ICU. In 2025, he returned to UVA, where he continues to care for critically ill patients in the TCV ICU.
Dr. Stout's clinical interests include ECMO and mechanical circulatory support as well as patient recovery after cardiothoracic surgery. He has a particular interest in postoperative arrhythmias, lactate physiology, and the role of sedation and sleep in ICU recovery. He has a deep commitment to medical education and particularly enjoys teaching the interpretation of the complex physiologic signals that define care in the cardiothoracic ICU.
