Bio & Overview

As an OB/GYN doctor, Shannon Weatherford, MD, specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. She has decades of experience promoting the health of women with her career focused on:

  • Routine and complex pregnancy
  • General gynecology
  • Contraceptive management
  • Major and minor gynecologic surgery

She also has a special interest in caring for patients who have language, cultural, or socioeconomic differences and challenges.

She describes her approach to working with patients as a partnership.

“I hope to bring knowledge and experience to help patients elect from options and therapies to promote their health,” she says. “I love what I do, and each patient I encounter has a lot they can teach me.”

She chose a career in medicine because of its focus on life-long learning. “I can use concrete skills to partner with my patients to promote their health and wellbeing, while being continually challenged to learn from them and others.”

Dr. Weatherford was raised in Richmond, Virginia. But for several years during childhood, she lived in Venezuela. During her undergraduate years at University of Virginia, she volunteered extensively with Madison House and Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad.

She received her medical degree and did her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University).

Before joining UVA Health, she worked in a private practice in Richmond, Virginia. There she developed a loyal clientele over 20 years. For several years, she also worked in and later became director of a homeless shelter in London, England.

Dr. Weatherford has sat on several boards and administrative committees in multiple hospital systems and in the private sector. She’s also assisted in legislative advocacy to promote the health and wellbeing of women.

There was no resolution for the concerns I came to the appointment for. I've had a problem for a few years that this provider told me not to treat. While the provider was pleasant to speak with, my medical issues were not resolved and there was no plan discussed to resolve them.

I was scheduled with Dr. Weatherford after receiving my pap smear results from my annual exam preformed by a different provider that is a NP. Dr. Weatherford and I had never met before this appointment. I found her bedside manner to be off-putting and felt both vulnerable and uncomfortable throughout the visit. I found her interactions with the nurse to be patronizing off and on throughout the appointment, which only added to my discomfort. If I need continued care under Dr. Weatherford (depending on the results of my colposcopy), I am hopeful that this was simply a one-off less than ideal encounter. I'd like to feel that my questions are welcomed, that my concerns are heard, and that I have not, in some way, been an inconvenience during my next appointment.
