Bio & Overview

Dr. Peter Lobo is a professor of medicine at UVA and is actively involved in patient care, teaching and research. He directed the medical kidney transplant program at UVA from 1985 to 2008 and increased kidney transplantation from 20 per year to 100 per year. He also helped start the pancreas and liver transplant programs. Dr. Lobo continues to direct the tissue matching program, which he started, for all organs, including lung and heart, here at UVA.

His research involves understanding why patients reject, identifying antibodies that could cause rejection and studying protective antibodies that can prevent rejection. He has close to 100 publications in this area of immunology. He has developed expertise in transplanting patients with antibodies that cause rejections. He developed a technique call pronase flow cross-match to identify antibodies that could cause rejection soon after transplant and this technique is now used by most transplant centers before any organ transplantation.

Dr. Lobo earned his medical degree from Makerere University in Uganda, and came to UVA jn 1971 for his fellowship and residency. He is married with three grown children: the eldest is a lawyer, the second an associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and the third an assistant professor and lung transplant physician at the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Lobo was instrumental in moving me through scheduling referrals with other services that lead to a cancer diagnosis outside of his specialty. That makes him the second doctor ever that I credit with going the extra mile to lead to life saving care for symptoms I had been ignoring. I can't say thank you enough.

The after-visit notes from the doctor said he ordered a urinary sample which is not true. He did order bloodwork to be done, which I did.
