Mary K Hardy, ACNP

As an acute care nurse practitioner, Mary Hardy, ACNP, specializes in hospital medicine.

She’s worked in a wide range of clinical settings, from the emergency department and intensive care to clinic and procedural areas.

“I appreciate the breadth these varied experiences have provided, preparing me to better support the complex journeys patients have to navigate within the healthcare system,” Mary says.

A native of Richmond, VA, Mary is a triple Hoo, having earned bachelor’s degrees in English and nursing, as well as a master of science in nursing degree from UVA. She also earned a master’s degree in bioethics from the University of Washington.

Mary says she took a “circuitous route” toward a career in healthcare. Though she majored in English for her first undergraduate degree, Mary became interested in medicine while participating in mountain search and rescue.

She earned her emergency medical technician (EMT) certification and spent time observing ER doctors and nurses at work. “Observing in the ER opened my eyes to the challenges of medicine, and that inspired me to explore a career in nursing,” says Mary, who worked as a bedside nurse for 10 years before returning to school to earn her nurse practitioner degree.

Outside of work, Mary enjoys spending time with her three daughters and their dog. An avid swimmer, she occasionally competes, but mostly enjoys watching and supporting her children’s sports.
