Keith E Littlewood, MD
Pain Medicine
Bio & Overview
As an anesthesiologist specializing in cardiothoracic care, Keith E. Littlewood, MD, works with some of the sickest patients undergoing the most complex procedures at UVA. Every day, he is focused on “meticulously managing the extraordinary challenges of these cases and making the human contact that truly provides for patient-centered care and values patient autonomy.”
Dr. Littlewood wants his patients to know that, “When we work together to prepare for your procedure under anesthesia, I will hear you, help you to make informed decisions, and respect your individuality and wishes.”
Born and raised on a family farm located in New York’s Southern Tier, Dr. Littlewood was the first in his family to attend college. After graduating from Columbia University, where he was a scholarship recipient to the School of Engineering, Dr. Littlewood attended the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical Center. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at VCU School of Medicine.
For most of his career, Dr. Littlewood provided intraoperative anesthetic care to patients undergoing cardiothoracic and solid-organ transplant procedures. In 2003, he was appointed as vice chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. He has served as assistant dean of the UVA School of Medicine since 2011.
Passionate about education and social justice, Dr. Littlewood says, “I am proud to have spent my professional life in public hospitals caring for every patient that needs our help. The privilege of educating tommorrow’s healthcare providers gives me great satisfaction and fulfillment.”
