Bio & Overview
Katelyn Bohanan, MS, LCGC, is a cancer genetic counselor who joined UVA Health in 2022. She appreciates the insights that genetics can provide on one's personal and/or family history of disease, especially in gauging cancer risk.
Her goal is to educate patients so they can work with their doctors to make informed decisions about their health.
"Finding out you have an increased risk for cancer can be very scary. But it can also be empowering," she says."Many tools today can help detect cancer early or even decrease the risk of developing certain cancers,” Katelyn says.
“I urge patients — even those who opt not to have genetic testing — to come in for a comprehensive risk assessment. We can help them learn about their risk of developing cancer and what options they may have moving forward."
Katelyn grew up in Maryland. She attended Salisbury University, where she was part of a lacrosse team that won two NCAA Division III championships. Next, she earned her master's degree in genetic counseling from VCU School of Medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, the gold standard in her profession.
Katelyn, her husband, and their two children live in Charlottesville and love it.
