Bio & Overview
Jonathan Garneau, MD, is a fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgeon who specializes in treating cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the head and neck region. This includes tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract, endocrine system, skin and salivary gland.
Originally from Rochester, New York, Garneau was exposed to the field of medicine at an early age; his mother is an anesthesiologist and his father is an internal medicine physician. He attended medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, and returned to New York for his residency training.
He chose the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City because it had a high-volume head and neck surgery program with an emphasis on not only removing and treating tumors, but also reconstructive surgery. During his residency, Garneau received the Chief Resident Teacher of the Year Award, an honor bestowed by his peers, along with the Chairman’s Award, given to the top graduate of the program.
After completing his fellowship at University Hospitals of Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Garneau joined the faculty at UVA. Here, he is part of a large team of skilled providers who are focused on providing the comprehensive, individualized care required to treat complex cancers.
In his free time, Garneau enjoys music, playing piano, drums and attending live shows. He and his wife take advantage of the many outdoor opportunities available in the Charlottesville area, especially hiking with their dog.
In the past, Garneau volunteered with a medical mission in Ecuador, assisting with cleft palate and lip repair procedures for children in underserved communities. He hopes to pursue more opportunities to do this type of volunteer work in the future.

Highlights
Otolaryngologist Jonathan Garneau, MD
I'm Jonathan Garneau and I'm a head and neck surgeon in the department of otolaryngology.Typical conditions I treat are cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the head and neck, typically of the aerodigestive system, the endocrine system, as well as the reconstruction afterwards, after removal of benign or malignant tumors. I had very early exposure to a family friend who was a head and neck surgeon. And I had the ability to work with him in the operating room and his clinic. And I saw the impact he had on his patients was remarkable, but most importantly, he was very good with patients. Patients really loved him. It really set head and neck surgery apart from other surgical fields, the type of rich relationship you can have with patients and follow them long-term throughout their care. The same condition may impact or affect patients in totally different ways, based on everyone's unique social condition, their expectations, and their goals. That's what I'm passionate about is understanding and eliciting those concerns and addressing those concerns as they come up. So I think what sets UVA apart from the rest is that you get a team approach. It's a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, and clinical staff. And I think that when you have complex conditions, they can be as seamless as possible at a comprehensive medical center with a very invested team that takes this responsibility very seriously, but also really enjoys it. So I think that's what really sets UVAapart from the rest and distinguishes it among other medical institutions.
