Bio & Overview
Colin Derdeyn, MD, is a diagnostic radiologist who provides endovascular treatment for a range of conditions, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), carotid artery stenosis, stroke, and dural arteriovenous malformations (dAVMs).
His research focuses on understanding brain blood flow and developing new techniques and devices to prevent ischemic stroke.
“Most of my time is spent educating people about their situation and what their options are,” he says. “I really enjoy how much relief understanding and knowledge can bring people. The people I see have scary conditions and uncertainty is a major factor in their anxiety. A lot of this anxiety can be relieved with good information and advice.”
Derdeyn grew up in Charlottesville. His father was the head of child and family psychiatry at UVA and his mother was the head of the guidance department at Charlottesville High School. His family spent a lot of their time outdoors hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains and canoeing on the Moormans River.
He earned his undergraduate degree and his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his radiology residency at the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital. He completed fellowships in diagnostic neuroradiology and stroke and cerebrovascular research at Washington University. He also completed a fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
