Bio & Overview
Casey E. Cavanagh, PhD, is a clinical health psychologist who specializes in cardiovascular behavioral medicine, transplant, and chronic disease management. She also co-directs the behavioral medicine consultation liaison service, which provides evidence-based psychological interventions to medically hospitalized patients. Her research interests include 1) patient-centered care and outcomes in end-stage cardiovascular disease and 2) psychological factors in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Born and raised in New York, Casey earned her undergraduate degree from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, and a doctorate in psychology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. She completed a clinical internship at the Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. She then completed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical health psychology followed by a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in health services research and development, both of which were completed at the Veteran's Administration Connecticut Healthcare System and Yale School of Medicine.
Casey joined the UVA faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences in 2019. She is board-certified in clinical health psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology. Additionally, she received the Excellence in Clinical Health Psychology by an Early Career Professional from the Society for Health Psychology (Division 38 of the American Psychological Association). Casey also serves in leadership positions for several professional organizations.
In her free time, she enjoys playing with her rescue dog, traveling, hiking, scuba diving and other outdoor activities.
