She completed her internal medicine at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI, and nephrology and transplant nephrology fellowships at UVA. She joined UVA in 2013 after having her first daughter.

She works with national societies to improve the access to living donor paired exchange, which can lead to a greater number of living donor kidney transplants.
She firmly believes that a diverse workforce, along with cultural and linguistically sensitive care, results in better outcomes and patient-clinician relationships, particularly among vulnerable communities. She leads a pre- and post-kidney transplant program that provides culturally and linguistically sensitive care to Latinx patients. Her overarching goal is to make transplant accessible to all Virginia residents with advanced kidney disease within Virginia, no matter their socio-economic status or other circumstances.
She received the Department of Medicine Clinical Excellence Award in 2018 and the Outstanding Patient Experience award for several consecutive years. Her leadership skills were recognized with her acceptance into the fourth cohort of the UVA Health Leadership Institute in 2025.
Nishio Lucar is married to a wonderful neurologist and together, they have 2 amazing daughters and an adorable beagle. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, doing high intensity training, reading, and recharging by escaping to nature, preferably the ocean.
