Andrew E Muck, MD
Emergency Medicine
Bio & Overview
As an emergency medicine physician, Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA, is experienced in providing exceptional patient care, educating the next generation of doctors, and contributing to advancements in his specialty at the local, regional, and global levels. Muck is chair of the UVA School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine.
Muck enjoys meeting patients and hearing their stories. He considers their input valuable in making health care decisions.
“I approach medical care as collaborative,” Muck says. “The patient and I are working together to come up with a treatment plan that works for them and achieves the desired health outcome.”
Growing up on a dairy farm in rural New York, Muck recalls working alongside his father to grow crops and care for cows. Active in 4-H, he says growing up on a farm was a formative experience. Caring for animals inspired his interest in the sciences and a medical career.
“Becoming a physician felt like a way I could serve my country, serve underserved populations, and help those in greatest need,” Muck says.
Before joining UVA Health in June 2023, Muck was a professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and held a faculty appointment in the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. At UT Health San Antonio, Muck helped launch the city’s first civilian emergency medicine residency. He also developed global health programs for residents, serving in various leadership roles, including program director, vice chair of education, and interim chair.
Muck served as the regional medical director at Victoria Emergency Associates (VEA) during the COVID-19 epidemic. He was responsible for provider management of 8 emergency departments for CHRISTUS Health’s Santa Rosa Hospital System. During his tenure with VEA, Muck led dramatic improvements in patient satisfaction and safety. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Muck served as an emergency medicine physician with deployments to Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.
Muck has led numerous clinical, educational, and humanitarian efforts. He was the founding medical director of the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic, which provides free health care for refugees placed in San Antonio. Muck has served as a consultant with the World Health Organization (WHO), where he has been involved with basic emergency care training in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Chisinau, Moldova. He also developed the WHO’s Community First Aid Response Course, which is being launched in resource-limited areas such as Iraq and East and Central Africa.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from New York’s Colgate University, Muck earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center and Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. He completed a fellowship in emerging infectious diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. He earned his MBA from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management.
