Photography & Recording Guidelines
At the University Medical Center, the privacy of our patients, visitors, and team members is important to us. While taking any pictures, videos, or recordings for personal or social media use, you must respect the privacy of those surrounding you.
Below are rules you must follow at UVA Health University Medical Center hospital, clinics, or offices while using a camera or recording device:
- While taking any pictures, videos, or recordings, you mustn't interfere with patient care or other services or create safety or privacy concerns.
- Both the patient and the University Medical Center team members must give permission for you to take pictures, videos, or recordings while team members are providing care or talking to a patient. This includes before, during, and after the birth of a baby.
- Patients can take pictures, videos, or recordings of themselves and may allow others to do so. Parents may photograph their own children. Pictures, videos, and recordings can't include any other people without their permission.
- Don't take pictures, videos, or recordings of doctors, nurses or other team members without their permission.
- Don't take pictures of other patients or their visitors without their permission.
- You must stop taking pictures, videos, or recordings when asked to do so by a University Medical Center team member.
- The University Medical Center team members may, upon request, use your personal device to take a picture, video, or recording. The patient and any other persons who will be included in the picture, video, or recording must give their permission.
- Taking pictures, videos, or recordings in bathrooms and changing rooms is not allowed.
- Don't take pictures, videos, or recordings in open patient care areas or common spaces, such as waiting rooms, hallways, and cafeterias. This protects any images and voices that may be in the background.
