UVA Health Bringing Comprehensive Cancer Care to Lynchburg
Patients who previously had to travel from Lynchburg to Charlottesville to receive cancer care at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center will soon be able to receive their care in Lynchburg.
UVA Health will begin offering cancer care services in Lynchburg this fall. Patients in the region will have access to high-quality medical oncology care starting in late October or early November.
The cancer clinic will be located at 103 Clifton St. on the ground floor of the UVA Health Lynchburg Dialysis building.
Most standard cancer treatments, including infusion therapies, will be available at the clinic through the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of just 58 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers nationally. The designation is awarded to elite cancer centers for outstanding cancer care and research.
“An important goal for UVA Health is to provide patients with easier access to our world-class care closer to home,” said Mitchell Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, chief executive officer of UVA Health and executive vice president for health affairs at UVA. “We’re excited to bring the expertise and skill of our team at the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center to patients in Lynchburg and Southside Virginia.”
The clinic will allow many patients in Lynchburg who now travel to Charlottesville to receive cancer carecloser to home, while creating capacity for UVA Health to serve additional patients in the community.
The new cancer clinic adds to an array of UVA Health services already offered in Lynchburg, including dialysis, cellular therapy, gynecologic oncology, nephrology, asthma, allergy and immunology.
“Traveling long distances to receive care can be especially challenging for patients undergoing cancer treatment, so we are looking forward to making our care more convenient for the many patients we already serve around Lynchburg,” said Leigh Cantrell, MD, MSPH, associate director for clinical affairs at the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Lynchburg cancer clinic will begin recruiting for open positions later this month.
