Bio & Overview

Stephanie Gillan, FNP, is a nurse practitioner who cares for general neurology and epilepsy patients. Stephanie grew up in Orange, Virginia. She always had an interest in caring for people and knew she wanted to work in the medical field. After graduating high school, she attended James Madison University and obtained her Bachelor of Science in nursing, with minors in chronic illness and medical Spanish.

She completed an externship at UVA Medical Center on the 6 Central (neurology, stroke, epilepsy) unit the summer before graduating from JMU. She greatly enjoyed caring for and learning about this patient population. After graduation, she went back to work on this unit as a registered nurse for several years. While working, she attended UVA and obtained her Master of Science in nursing with a family nurse practitioner focus. After graduation, she accepted a position as a family nurse practitioner in a family medicine clinic in Charlottesville where she was able to learn and grow as a nurse practitioner. She saw patients of all ages with an array of illnesses.

Her mother is an RN who helped care for Stephanie’s grandfather, who suffered from a stroke. As a child, Stephanie also saw her mom help care for Stephanie’s great-grandmother, who had Parkinson’s disease. “This is one of the main reasons why I wanted to become a nurse,” Stephanie says. “I approach patients as a whole. I allow them to be able to comfortably communicate with me as a provider. I listen and try to understand their main concerns and come up with a treatment plan with the patient, while educating them about the importance and reasons for doing so.”

While the NP was kind during the appointment, I am not making progress and my conditions are worsening. When I have brought up other questions or lines of inquiry to investigate, they are not addressed. I also often have to repeat myself and it feels like previous conversations are forgotten or not referenced. I feel that I am not given many other avenues or opportunities for improvement or investigation despite asking for them. I also feel like the response/follow-up is not commensurate to the severity of the problem. I also began in this practice seeing doctors and somehow got shifted to an NP. I would like to see a doctor/specialist for my condition to due to its severity/complexity.
