Bio & Overview
As a general surgeon and a breast surgical oncologist, Mark Bartolozzi, MD, brings to UVA Health his extensive experience with laparoscopic (minimally invasive) as well as open surgeries.
A leading member of the medical community for more than 25 years, his expertise includes:
- Hernia surgery: inguinal, umbilical, and incisional
- Gallbladder surgery, more than 2,000 procedures performed
- Oncologic (cancer) surgery: breast, colon, and melanoma
- Colon and intestinal surgery, including appendectomies
- Skin and subcutaneous lesions: lipomas, sebaceous cysts, and other typical skin lesions
“It’s important to me that I bring the excellence and care for each of my patients that I would want my own family to receive,” he shares.
He believes in leading with empathy, particularly with his patients facing breast cancer. During this journey, he shares, “I’m there with my patients from the first minimally invasive biopsy through their total care experience. For many women, this is a long road, and it’s important to have a supportive community around them."
"My care extends beyond the patient to their loved ones as well," he adds. "In many situations, care decisions are made jointly between the patients and their loved ones, and I want to ensure that everyone feels knowledgeable and clear on the options available to them.”
Dr. Bartolozzi performs surgery for benign breast disease as well. He is ultrasound certified by the American Society of Breast Surgeons and has been performing minimally invasive ultrasound as well as stereotactic biopsies throughout his medical practice.
Dr. Bartolozzi attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts before progressing to achieve his Masters of Science in Biology & Physiology from New York University. He earned his medical degree at New York Medical College and did five years of general surgery residency at Westchester County Medical Center in New York.
A New York City native, Dr. Bartolozzi married his college sweetheart before moving to Virginia where they raised their four children. He is an avid Peloton user and enjoys playing golf with his children. He has served on numerous medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and he has also served as co-chair and liaison for the American College of Surgeons.

Highlights
Breast Cancer Surgery
Hi. I'm Mark Bartolozzi. I'm a general surgeon at UVA Health General Surgery and I've been a physician in this community for over 30 years. I see all kinds of patients. I see a lot of breast patients. I do a lot of gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery, lumps and bumps. A broad base practice, actually. I'm a good old-fashioned general surgeon. I like general surgery because we do a little bit of everything. But the other thing that's really great about general surgery is that you come to me with a problem, I take out your appendix or your gallbladder or your breast lump, and you're fixed. I have taken care of breast surgery in this community for over 30 years. I've gotten to know these patients and see them yearly. They become friends. I get to know about their families, their lives, and I find that extremely gratifying. I love my job. I love taking care of the patients and I love learning. I constantly read and stay abreast of things, and I feel like I have a great gift to give people. I think patients should come to UVA because of the patient care that we give here. We listen to our patients. We care about them. We care about their families. We want them to get better.
