Highlights
Meet Breast Surgeon Ian Greenwalt, MD
I'm Dr. Ian Greenwalt. I'm director of breast surgical oncology at UVA Health and I'm a fellowship trained breast surgical oncologist. I provide care for all realms of breast health for patients. That includes patients with a breast cancer diagnosis, benign breast disease, such as breast infections or precancerous lesions, also patients who are at high risk because of family history or personal health history, and then patients with any specific breast concerns in terms of breast cancer screening or breast density. I developed an interest in medicine from an early age. I was exposed to a lot of medicine through my family, through physicians and nurses in the family. After trying my own path along different of life, I came back to them and got more inspiration and counseling from the physicians and nurses in my family and ultimately decided that it was the right fit for me. In breast health and breast surgical oncology, an important part of that is patients having an understanding of their diagnosis so that they can make informed decisions about their care. The best thing as a breast surgical oncologist is seeing people on the other side and getting back to normal and having their lives kind of restored after a tough diagnosis.
