Bio & Overview

Hong Joo Moon, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon who specializes in complex and revision spine surgery and the management of adult and pediatric scoliosis and deformity. He also treats spinal radiculopathy, cervical myelopathy, spine tumors, and spine trauma.

Dr. Moon earned his medical degree and completed his neurosurgical residency at Korea University College of Medicine, where he also completed his spine fellowship training. In 2013, he began an academic career at his alma mater and was promoted to a tenured professor in 2022.

“Over the past decade, I have successfully balanced a high-volume clinical practice with academic leadership and research, establishing myself as one of the leading spine surgeons in Korea,” he says.

Driven by a desire for further professional growth and new challenges, he made the decision to leave his tenured position and relocate to the United States in 2023. After completing the necessary licensure preparation, his fulfilled a spine fellowship at UVA for a year. This experience has allowed him to enhance his expertise and adapt to the U.S. healthcare environment while continuing to advance his clinical and academic skillset.

“I spent over a decade at one of Korea's most prominent spine centers, where I performed more than 2,000 spinal surgeries. I have developed a keen ability to determine which patients require surgical intervention, what type of surgery is most appropriate, and how to execute it with precision,” he says. “I believe this depth of experience and skill has allowed me to earn the opportunity to join a leading spine group like UVA.”

I feel like he listened but also didn't get things about my existing conditions

All he was concerned about was talking about my weight and not the other issues I face and injuries I have had in the past. He mentioned my weight no less then 10 times. I realize that's an issue, but weight isn't a cure all for everything. I had Degenerative disc disease diagnosed when I was 22 and in the Army still.

I was absolutely delighted with Dr Moon and the attending PA (can't remember her name). They were both knowledgeable, caring and articulate. I could not be more pleased.

Although the providers were late for my appointment, they apologized, but more importantly gave me the time that I needed and did not rush my appointment.
