Heather Cannova is a family nurse practitioner at UVA Health Family Medicine and Same Day Care Dominion who specializes in meeting the healthcare needs of patients across their lifespan.
“I teach them how to manage acute illnesses and help them navigate the medical system, so they can be actively involved in their own healthcare,” she says. “It is my ultimate goal for patients to feel that they were listened to and their concerns were addressed to the best of our abilities in the urgent care setting.”
A Virginia resident for more than 35 years, Cannova spent her early years moving around the U.S., from Colorado to Washington. She graduated from the University of Virginia and worked in office supplies and computer sales before deciding to pursue her nursing degree at Germanna Community College in Locust Grove, Va.
It was a passion for learning and patient care that led her to take her education a step further. She obtained her Master’s of Nursing Education degree from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minn., and then a Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Purdue University Global.
“Being a nurse practitioner is a demanding job that challenges me to constantly think of creative and evidence-based treatments for my patients,” she says. “I am very thankful that I can do what I do. I love that I can go to work and help someone every day.”
