Bio & Overview
Dawn Howell is a board-certified family nurse practitioner based at UVA Primary Care Locust Grove. She specializes in family practice, caring for the entire family across the lifespan, and especially enjoys practicing pediatric, adolescent and women's health.
Ms. Howell was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she spent all of her childhood. She is a proud Tarheel, receiving her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then worked as a registered nurse in hospital-based settings for eight years, including as a cardio-thoracic nurse and a Certified Post-Anesthesia Care Nurse (CPAN).
In 2008, Ms. Howell received her MSN/family nurse practitioner degree from Radford University, where she was recognized as the top academic student in her class. She worked in Cranford, New Jersey, for nearly six years before relocating back to Virginia and starting her position with UVA in 2014. In addition to her primary care work, she serves as a clinical mentor and preceptor for nurse practitioner students at UVA School of Nursing.
Ms. Howell has been recognized by Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society of nursing, for her academic and leadership achievements since 1999. She happily resides with her husband and two daughters in Spotsylvania. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family and her hobbies include hiking, gardening, reading and home improvement projects.
