Bio & Overview
Christopher Luminais, MD, is a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of prostate cancer and other genitourinary cancers. His research interests include the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided brachytherapy and other advanced approaches to treat prostate cancer, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
Dr. Luminais grew up in Philadelphia, where he was exposed to the field of medicine at a young age thanks to his parents, who were both doctors. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, he decided to return to Philadelphia to attend medical school at Thomas Jefferson University.
“I knew that I wanted a career that was closely tied to the biological sciences. I also enjoy interacting with people and being able to see the direct impact that the science of medicine can have on the lives of patients,” he says.
“For me, medicine is a perfect fit — it is both academically and interpersonally rewarding.”
After medical school, Dr. Luminais came to UVA Health to complete an internship in internal medicine followed by a residency in radiation oncology. He joined the faculty at UVA in August 2023.
Dr. Luminais views his patients as partners in their care. “I strive to get to know my patients really well and educate them on their full range of treatment options,” he says. “I think this approach is critical because it helps my patients move forward with the treatment option that is the best fit for them given their specific needs and priorities.”
Outside of work, Dr. Luminais is active in the Charlottesville community. He enjoys making ceramic artwork, hiking, kayaking, and spending quality time with his wife and two cats.
