Bio & Overview

Barrett H. Barnes, MD, is a pediatric gastroenterologist, who is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He has expertise in caring for children with gastrointestinal and food allergy conditions, including:

  • Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs)
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
  • Food protein-induced enterocolitis (FPIES)
  • Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) or red meat allergy
  • Celiac disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

At UVA Health Children's, Dr. Barnes founded two pediatric multidisciplinary clinics. One for eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, and another for gastrointestinal food allergy syndromes.

He is the co-director of the Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases (EGIDs) clinic with Dr Emily McGowan and the Gastrointestinal Allergy Clinic (Alpha Gal Syndrome, FPIES) with Dr Samantha Minnicozzi from the Division of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.

In his approach to working with children and their families, Dr. Barnes says, “I treat everyone the same. I give them my best regardless of their lot in life.”

“Children are the underdogs in this country. I love the underdog. I love serving the underserved, the under-valued, the under-represented, those without voice, resources or choice.”

Dr. Barnes has an interest in medical education. He serves as the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship director. He’s also served as both associate and director of the General Pediatric Residency Program at UVA Health.

An Indiana native, Dr. Barnes grew up in a rural environment until mid-high school, which took him briefly to the Chicago suburbs. He quickly returned to Indiana and completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington and his graduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, and completed his residency in general pediatrics at the University of Virginia. His fellowship training in pediatric gastroenterology took him to the Children’s Hospital at the University of Colorado, Denver.

He returned to UVA Health Children's and joined the faculty in 2007. Outside of work, Dr. Barnes enjoys spending time with “my family, my critters, as well as most hands-on projects like carpentry, hardscaping, woodworking, masonry and gardening.” He adds, “I love my Hoosiers and Bruins and have ZERO shame in being a Hokie fan alongside the Cavaliers.”
