Andrew Wang, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist who serves as chief of the section of interventional endoscopy in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and as the director of interventional endoscopy at UVA. Dr. Wang specializes in interventional gastrointestinal endoscopy and helping patients with problems in the luminal GI tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum and colon), the pancreas and biliary tract. He treats bile duct stones and strictures rectal polyps and routinely performs procedures such as endsoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and/or endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for pancreaticobiliary strictures, stones, masses, cysts and other disorders. He also offers specialized ERCP procedures, including choledochoscopy, intraductal EUS, biliary radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), laser lithotripsy and complex perihilar stenting.
Dr. Wang has received specialized training and certification in the identification and endoluminal resection of precancerous and early GI cancers. He routinely performs endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) to remove large lesions in the GI tract. Dr. Wang also performs peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for patients with esophageal achalasia.
Dr. Wang is an active member of various GI societies, and he is a fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). His career has focused on endoscopic education and clinical research, and he has participated in multicenter, national and international studies to foster innovation and to advance patient outcomes in the field of interventional endoscopy. Dr. Wang and his colleagues in interventional endoscopy work closely with UVA surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists and referring physicians to provide specialized multidisciplinary care to patients.

I'm Andy Wang and I'm a gastroenterologist who specializes in interventional endoscopy here at UVA. I've always wanted to be a doctor, as a boy I loved trying to figure out how things worked but it was probably when my parents were diagnosed and had to overcome severe duodenal ulcer disease and colon cancer that my desire to go into medicine in gastroenterology was really solidified. I perform ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound procedures which focus on the bile duct and the pancreas and we help to diagnose and remove stones from people's bile ducts and we even help people diagnose and manage pancreas cancers. Here at UVA we have a state of the art endoscopy unit but more importantly we have just a really special caring and experienced group of nurses, endoscopy technicians, and physicians. Although I'm proceduralist we try to look at the patient as a whole and more so not ever procedure is right for every patient. It's just a great feeling all around when you can meet someone, help them figure out what's going on, and take care of them so that when they go back to their family and friends they feel better.
