Alexis Halyard, MD, is a family medicine doctor. Her specialties include pediatric care and gender-affirming care. She provides pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care to prevent HIV infection and care for people with HIV. She also performs procedures to insert IUDs and contraceptive arm implants.

She gravitated to family medicine not only because of her mother but because of the wide scope of the specialty. “What I love about my job is the ability to provide care to people of all ages and establish lifelong relationships with patients,” she says.
Halyard received her undergraduate degree from Yale University. She earned her medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta and completed her residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She has an HIV specialist certification from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Meet Family Medicine Physician Alexis Halyard, MD
Hi, my name is Dr. Alexis Halyard. I'm a family medicine physician at UVA Health. I do a little bit of everything. I think that the beauty of family medicine is that we do have a really broad scope. So I'm able to do regular wellness visits, annual physicals, but I also am an HIV specialist. My mom is a family medicine physician and she is a huge reason why I became a physician. I also realized that I wanted to do something that I felt that I was bringing real benefit to the community that I would live in, and that I could build lifelong relationships with folks. I chose family medicine because I do like seeing people regularly. I like the longitudinal relationships that you get with seeing folks for annual visits or even sick visits. What I also appreciate about family medicine is that I get to see the dynamics of a family and really understand what goes into the care and the health of my patients. I think that someone should choose UVA Health for their care because as a healthcare system, UVA Health is dedicated to promoting the health of all Virginians.
