Clinical Trials | Sniff Training: Research Study for Adults and Children with Post-Viral Anosmia and Hyposmia
SniffTrain: Effectiveness of Sniff Training in the Treatment of Post-Viral Anosmia
The Center for Smell and Taste Disorders seeks adults and children ages 10 to 60 with post-viral anosmia or hyposmia (smell loss) for a research study. The purpose of the study is to test the effectiveness of sniff training to improve smell function. You may be eligible for this study if: - You lost your sense of smell as a result of a viral infection such as a cold, flu, or COVID-19 - You have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet - You are willing to participate in study activities for a 52 week period The study involves completing 4 in-person clinic visits (each lasting between 1 and 1 and a half hours) over a 52-week period and completing “sniff” training at home daily over a 24-week period. During the clinic visits, subjects will complete questionnaires and smell tests, which involve smelling scents. Subjects will also be randomized to 1 of 3 groups for the sniff training, differing in odor presentation and odor amount. There is the potential for participating in a “control” group, often referred to as a placebo, where the sniff training kit will not be identical to those in other groups. Study-related interventions will be provided at no cost.
